If, however, you have saved up for a more extravagant gift, then something like a gorgeous piece of jewellery will be always warmly received.

You may also think about the most sensitive way to get a gift. For example, a friend who is always trying to lose weight might not appreciate getting weight loss books even if they might be practical.
